Hi. I’m Guy Smith. I was born in England the year Pete Best left the Beatles. That’s right smart-ass I’m maybe kinda dusty to be fronting my first rock’n’roll band; but I always figure you are where you are and if you enjoy being there all the better. And for me nothing could be better than holding down the position of songwriter, singer and guitar player in The Revtones. For me The Revtones is the ultimate consolidation of everything I enjoy about writing and performing: the camaraderie, hitting the groove, sharing creativity, playing the best music I ever have, putting on great live shows and having a helluva lot of fun.
I’ve been kicking around the independent music scene in Edmonton for a while mostly doing solo gigs in the singer songwriter (with an edge) vein. Comparisons were made to Billy Bragg, which is unfair to Billy; but I must say that he was a huge influence on the way I wrote and performed. A more consistent influence over the years has been Paul Weller (The Jam, Style Council). I think when you hear The Revtones you hear a bit of The Jam and stuff that Weller has been doing solo. More recently American singer songwriters such as Ryan Adams and Steve Earle have had an impact on my writing.
Beyond those identifiable reference points, I must admit to liking all sorts of music from folk, blues, 60’s and 70’s soul, rock and pop.
My goal with music has always been to have fun, to find a healthy outlet for all the things I’m passionate about, to entertain, and to challenge myself to get better at my art.
I have two CDs released under Guy Smith: “Red Square Dance” (2002), and “We’re All In This Together” (2005). Both CDs are available by contacting me.
I ‘m hoping that The Revtones can get into the recording studio in the not too distant future as we have a ton of new grooves itching to be recorded.
For all you trainspotters out there my tools of trade are: a 1991 Gibson Southern Jumbo re-issue of the 1942 model with Rosewood back and sides, a 1999 Fender Telecaster 1952 re-issue, a @1987 Washburn EA20, and a mid-sixties Vox Berkeley II amp.
Thanks for looking at our website. Please get on our mailing list and come check out The Revtones in action if you get the chance.
Cheers
Guy
